Hello folks,

I own BassGuitar.com and am very interested in standing up a FOREM based community for Bass Guitar enthusiasts. I also manage a Facebook page for BassGuitar.com that has 17K followers so there is a seed community to be drawn on.

My hope is to find a team of developers who are familair with the FOREM platfrom and who also are interested in a musician centered social network.

While I don't have any dev or product management skills, I do have a lot I can bring to the effort in a few critical areas.

All the best,

Ron Sheridan

Hey Ron,

Really awesome to hear about your community!

I'm a singer/guitarist so naturally have created a Forem for synthesizer enthusiasts called synthusiasts.club. πŸ˜…

I'm no bassist (yet!) but just give me time.

Anyway, I definitely think Forem has a bright future for hosting music-focused communities. The ability to easily embed YouTube videos and Soundcloud within posts is pretty dang sweet!

For instance, here's my band (commencing shameless promotion...):

And a really cool jam by Victor Wooten:

If you have any questions about Forem, don't hesitate to hit me up! You can visit my profile:

Hello again Michael,

Would it be possible to arrange a brief chat with you?

I want very much to find some help standing up a BassGuitar.com community using FOREM.

For example are you aware of a FORM community member who might be able to assist me on a contract basis or other arrangement?

All the best,

Ron Sheridan

Hey Ron!

Apologies for the delayed response. I took a long weekend trip to see some family... anywho, back in action now. πŸ™‚

I'd love to schedule a time to chat with you!

I'll shoot you an email and we'll figure out a good time to meet up.

Just a heads up that I may need to wait until next week to meet, because this week my team is hosting a conference called CodeLand so it's kind of all hands on deck right now.

Anywho, I'll be in touch and we'll find time to meet soon!

Once DNS is pointed at your Forem VM, you will need to restart the Forem Traefik service (sudo systemctl restart forem-traefik.service) via SSH on your Forem server (github.com/forem/selfhost#ssh-exam...) to generate a TLS cert.

I don't get it: what password can I use to enter inside here:

Hi Everyone,

Tim here from Singapore. I have been on the search for a good open source forum platform, but have only found discourse back then.

I found this on a article on top open source forums and its interesting to see such a design for a forum.

I have just successfully hosted my forem on UpCloud. Can't wait to get tinkering with the various capabilities of forem.

Thank you @forem for giving us a better option and better user centric design.

Hi everyone !

I'm Rayan from Paris, France :)

I'm passionate about building technology to reduce poverty and address the United Nations sustainable development goals. A few years ago I was building a business training app for low-literate populations in India (like financial literacy for street vendors). That unfortunately didn't work out and I came back to France just in time for covid !

Since then I've been actively following people and organisations working in international development, but I often get frustrated that they mostly talk about workshops and policy briefs. What I've always wanted was participating in a community of builders and experimenters, kind of like Indie Hackers but for international development.

So I might as well kickstart that community. I started setting up Development Hackers with forem last week and right now I'm trying to figure out what to do before launching it.

I would love to connect with anyone who's curious about building tech and solving global problems. And if anyone's got tips about kickstarting a forem I'm all ears !

Thanks !

This week is a bit busy for me, but I'm going to reach out to ya here soon and see if we might be able to meet up so that I can give you a general walkthrough of the Forem platform, learn more about your community, and gather any feedback you have for us about your experience thus far.

I'll be in touch in the near future. Until then, hope all is well!

I'm in Michael's team at Forem and also excited to hear about your Forem. I can heavily relate to your pain here (got a job with an international development NGO straight out of college but felt the same frustrations and left shortly afterwards to work directly with communities). Your business training app sounds a lot like Paulo Friere's work.

I just joined your Forem - excited to see where this goes !

Hi I am from the land of the long white cloud New Zealand. My only hobby atm is leaning to code to be a game dev but I see I want to know it all lol. I have 5 kids that keep me busy too so its a juggling act. A fun fact is that I love to play jokes on my partner all the time lol and she loves me for that I think lol. My interest is building a game on blockchain so I want to start in easy then build epic, I have 20 years of playing games and have so many ideas to go epic as but I see building epic will take more than just me. I am here to learn but will work towards being a teacher as I think I will need to teach people to help them so some of them can help me build my epic games so building a forum is what I might have to do along my journey but Every Friday I will discuss a review on my path on my social media networks to help others become developers. The skill set I have that makes me good at understanding information are my Autistic traits that were probably a weakness when I was young but now since I understand them I see things differently and have over the years streamlined those skills sets and those Austic traits are a blessing today as I screen through information with ease and can see the benefits. Anyway Hi to you all and hope I can add value to this platform as I learn to code.

Hi Steven πŸ‘‹

Welcome to Forem.dev!

This community is dedicated to helping folks who are interested in building communities on Forem. This site is actually built on Forem!

You can browse through a bunch of other Forems that have been launched right here. We don't yet have any Forems specifically for gaming devs, but hopefully very soon we will.🀞

We do have a #gamedev tag on DEV, our largest Forem community that's also run by the Forem Team, so you might be interested in joining up with the community there and following this tag to regularly see game dev content! You also might like checking out posts under #unity or #unreal. If you don't find what you're looking for, you could even consider posting a question under #help to ask folks whatever it is that you might need. Generally speaking, the community at DEV is very friendly and eager to help new developers.

Similarly, we have a community specifically for new developers called CodeNewbie that you might want to join up with and talk with others about game development. This community is a bit smaller than DEV, but still very active and friendly!

Lastly, if you do decide to join multiple Forem communities, I'd suggest that you sign up with our new OAuth method, Forem passport, which will allow you to easily sign up across multiple Forems. If you do sign up, all you need to do is visit your account settings on any Forem that has it activated (e.g. dev.to/settings/account) and click β€œConnect Forem Account” at the top of the page to connect your Forem.

Anyway, if you have any questions about the Forem platform, any of our communities like DEV, Passport, or anything else, don't hesitate to get in touch!

Heyo to anyone who pops in here! πŸ‘‹

First off, don't hesitate to ask any questions if you have any.

If you're new here and just getting started with launching your own self-hosted Forem, you'll likely want to take a look through some of the articles tagged with #selfhost and #tutorial posted under the Forem Core Team.

We're also encouraging community members to post their own user-guided tutorials under #creatorwalkthroughs... more info on that in this post.

Anyway, just a bit of information for you as you get started here! Hope you enjoy the site and again, ask away if you need help with anything! (Also feel free to post questions under #help!)

Hey! I don't quite understand the difference between dev.to and forem.dev - but I enjoy both sites! I'm guessing dev.to is more of a blog site and forem.to is a discussion board?

Collapse

michaeltharrington profile image
Michael Tharrington • Edited

Hey Ashley! πŸ‘‹

That's a great question and I'd be happy to help explain the difference. πŸ™‚

DEV (dev.to) is a community for software developers to write and read articles pertinent to programming. It is built on the community platform called Forem. The DEV team actually created Forem after creating DEV... here's an announcement post for Forem that our founder Ben shared on DEV which explains the whole idea of Forem.

Forem.dev is a community for folks interested in creating their own Forem communities. It's kind of our meta Forem β€” a Forem about Forem. Here's an announcement post for forem.dev that appeared on dev.to. Most of the folks in the forem.dev community are looking for advice on setting up a Forem of their own or they want guidance on managing their Forem community or potentially they have feature ideas to improve the platform that they want to brainstorm with the Forem team.

Note that the DEV (dev.to) team and the Forem team are one in the same! Forem is the company name and the Forem platform is our product. DEV is the largest community running on the Forem platform and we manage this community.

Hope this helps! Of course, let me know if you have any questions. πŸ˜€

Thank you for your great reply! So I do have a few questions:

  1. I noticed my username was free, is that because they are reserved for github usernames (which matches my username) or because I got lucky?

  2. Lets say I have a meta-question about something on dev.to specifically, should I come here or shall I stay there? (The dev.to 'contact' page forwarded me here, making me think this is the 'discussion' part of dev.to)

  3. Does the style of post vary at all between dev.to and here? This place felt more like a forum than a blog site, yet now that I look closely, both sites do indeed operate identically! Maybe it's just the nature of the content that feels different (questions / blogs) rather than the structure of the site itself.

Thank you for being so accommodating!

Thread Thread

ellativity profile image
Ella (she/her/elle)

Hey @ashe , again with the great questions! I'm Ella, and I work with Michael on the Forem (and dev.to!) Community Team πŸ‘‹ glad you could join us here.

  1. We don't reserve usernames, but since Forem.dev is a pretty specialist community (for people who are interested in hosting their own Forems), it's small enough that you got in early and scored your choice of username. Which it seems like you did on GitHub too, so I'm about to ask you for some lottery numbers πŸ€

  2. For the most part, a meta question about dev.to will be a question about Forem. We tend to lean towards any question about any Forem being a helpful question for all Forems. Although that's not 100% accurate, there's a good chance that a meta question about dev.to will be informative for Admins of other Forems.

  3. Each Forem is a community in its own right, so content definitely varies between Forems. The software these communities are run on is the same (Forem) but the communities themselves are different. That means the content on dev.to (a developer community) is different to the content on forem.dev (a Forem community), which is different to the content on 1vibe.com (hip hop) or flowstate.to (health and fitness) or joinforest.com (sustainable living).

I hope this helps! And please feel free to keep the questions coming.
