Changelog: A comment-only Forem

Hello there, Forem Creators!

Many of you told us that you would like to have more control over how you organize your posts. You might want to assign different permissions to a group of content. We can even imagine a Forem where some of the areas are accessible to a selection of members. The value of tailoring the content experience for your members really needs no explanation!

A comment-only experience is now available!

As a small first step towards the grand goal of providing finer-grained control over your content organization, we are enabling a โ€œcomment-onlyโ€ setting for your Forem. If your vision is to have your community members interact only with content created by you, the community owner, this is the way. Comment-only Forems are also suitable if you are using your Forem as a place for official announcements, where only your staff can post.

Comment-only Forem configuration

Awesome! Where do I access this?

This feature is located under /admin/content-manager/spaces, under โ€œContent Managerโ€ in your admin panel.

Who gets to post when comment-only is on?

Great question! Only your admins, super admins, and you, the Creator, would be able to post when this configuration is on. This applies to the entirety of a Forem. Single-resource admins also are not authorized to post.

What if I decide to let my members post, again?

Easy! Just switch the toggle off and save it. Once the UI cache finishes refreshing (taking ~15 mins), your Forem is back to one where all members can create posts.

Thanks for reading!

I hope you are as excited as I am to see this feature launched and what the future holds. We have been brewing this initiative for a long time and it takes lots of effort from many people to pull this off.

Big shoutouts to @jeremyf, @ridhwana_k, @anujbhavsar96, @pp, @jennieocken, @ellativity, and all the Creators who have shared your vision of how youโ€™d like to tailor your content experience with us. It takes a whole team!

As always, Iโ€™d love to hear your feedback and am happy to answer any questions. Just let us know in the comments below!

Love that this is now an option! Great job Forem team ๐Ÿ’š

Would be cool if you could give individual users or a specific set list of users permission to post. I can see a scenario where users of my Forem would first have to make 30 comments, they get a badge, and also get permission to make posts for earning this badge. This can be done manually right now but would be nice if permission to post was automatically give to user once they earn the badge.

๐Ÿ‘€ Did you gain access to our internal roadmap somehow? Because that's on the roadmap! Though I can't guarantee when we'll get there as we have a lot on our plate, but that is the idea.

Indeed. This would be something further down the road, but I imagine when we get the infrastructure ready, maybe we could consider opening up a few APIs so this type of scenarios could be wired as desired.

I've added this (/admin/content-manager/spaces) to: forem.dev Got nothing.
I'm pushing myself to understand the benefits of Forem. As a user I don't feel good about finding instructions that I can't use.
I welcome you to this conversation.
